Quick answer: your Google tag ID starts with G- (Google Analytics 4) or AW- (Google Ads). Find it in Google Analytics → Admin → Data streams → your stream → Configure tag settings. Paste it in HookPage → Settings → All pages tracking → Google tag ID.
What is the Google tag?
The Google tag (gtag.js) is one piece of code from Google that sends data from your website to Google products such as Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads. The Google tag ID tells it where to send the data.
- An ID starting with G- belongs to a Google Analytics 4 web data stream, for example
G-AB12CD34EF. - An ID starting with AW- belongs to a Google Ads account, for example
AW-123456789.
Why it’s useful
- See your traffic: how many people visit your landing pages, from where and on which device.
- Know your best sources: compare visits from Google, Meta, TikTok, email and more.
- Build Google Ads audiences: with an AW- ID, Google Ads can learn who visited your pages.
Why HookPage needs it
- HookPage loads the Google tag with your ID on every HookPage landing page and sends a page view when the page opens. Your other WordPress pages are not touched.
- Available in: HookPage Free. Conversion events (leads, purchases) need HookPage Pro: see GA4 measurement IDs and Google Ads conversion IDs.
- With Pro, if the Advanced tracking fields are empty, HookPage reuses this ID: a G- ID as your GA4 ID, an AW- ID as your Google Ads ID.
Where to find your Google tag ID
In Google Analytics (G- ID):
- Go to Google Analytics and open Admin.
- Under Data collection and modification, click Data streams and select your web stream.
- At the bottom, under Google tag, click Configure tag settings.
- Under Your Google tag, copy the ID that starts with G-.
In Google Ads (AW- ID):
- In Google Ads, open Tools → Data manager.
- Under Google tag, click Manage.
- Click your Google tag and copy the ID under Tag details.
You must have Editor access or higher to see these settings.
Add it to HookPage
- Go to HookPage → Settings → All pages tracking.
- Paste your ID in Google tag ID and save.
SCREENSHOT TO ADD: HookPage → Settings → All pages tracking → “Google tag ID”
HookPage accepts IDs that start with G-, AW-, GT- or DC-, followed by letters and numbers. If the ID doesn’t look right, it isn’t saved and you’ll see: “The Google tag ID should look like G-XXXXXXX or AW-123456789. It was not saved.”
This field takes one ID. To use several GA4 or Google Ads IDs, use HookPage Pro → Advanced tracking.
Check that it works
Open your landing page, then in Google Analytics go to Reports → Realtime. Your visit should appear within a minute or two. You can also test with Google Tag Assistant.
