Quick answer: type your full number in international format: country code first, then the number, digits only. Example: 15551234567 for the US number +1 (555) 123-4567. Don’t start with 0 or 00.
What is the WhatsApp number setting?
It’s the phone number your WhatsApp buttons open a chat with. When a visitor taps a WhatsApp button on your landing page, WhatsApp opens a chat with this number, with your welcome message already typed in. The visitor only has to press send.
This uses WhatsApp’s official click to chat links. They work on phones and on WhatsApp Web, and the visitor doesn’t need to save your number first.

The correct format
WhatsApp asks for the full phone number in international format, without zeros in front, brackets or dashes. In practice:
- Start with your country code (1 for the US and Canada, 44 for the UK, 49 for Germany, 33 for France).
- Add your number without the leading 0 that you use when calling inside your country.
- Use digits only. HookPage removes spaces,
+, brackets and dashes for you, and keeps at most 15 digits.

Watch out: HookPage removes symbols, but it can’t remove a leading 0 or a 00 prefix for you. 07700900123 or 00447700900123 will not open the right chat.
Where to add it in HookPage
- In WordPress, go to HookPage → Settings.
- Open the Pages tab.
- Type your number in WhatsApp number and save.

To change the number, message or look of one button, select the WhatsApp button block on your page and use its settings: Phone, Message, Label and Style (floating or inline).
Test it
Open your landing page on your phone and tap the WhatsApp button. WhatsApp should open a chat with your business name or number and your message ready to send. The number must have an active WhatsApp account.
